Mazda officials told us at this month’s Mazda3 preview that more Mazda diesels could be on the way if shoppers snap up the Mazda6 diesel. But we won’t know that until next year — the automaker pushed back the oil-burning version of its redesigned family sedan from late 2013 to a spring 2014 launch. “Based on the reception that [the Mazda6] receives, we will determine whether we add [diesels] to other vehicle lines,” Mazda spokesman Jeremy Barnes told us Sept. 18. That would make Mazda the latest automaker to board the small but growing affordable-diesel bandwagon. Up until recently, the only small non-luxury diesel sedan was Volkswagen’s Jetta TDI. Volkswagen doesn’t regularly break out Jetta TDI sales, and two spokesmen did not immediately provide figures. But 38.5% of new Jetta inventory on Cars.com are TDIs, which suggests the diesel is a popular choice for Jetta shoppers. VW added a TDI version to its U.S. Beetle for 2013, and GM threw its hat in the ring with the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel, which went on sale earlier this year. But before anyone starts clamoring for a Mazda3 diesel, hold onto your horses — or pounds-feet, as it were — we’ll first need to see the diesel Mazda6, and that could be a while.

Strong car sales could mean fewer discounts Originally published: September 6, 2013 4:32 PM Updated: September 6, 2013 9:19 PM By TOM INCANTALUPO email@example.com Photo credit: Newsday / Jeffrey Basinger | Rita Iannuzzi, of Smithtown, checks out a Hyundai while helping her mother shop Monday at Atlantic Auto Mall in West Islip. A new report says registration of new vehicles are up, showing that Long Islanders are in a vehicle-buying mood. (July 29, 2013) Galleries Carmakers and dealers are driving toward another new model year in the best shape since before the recession, with rising sales and truckloads of new product on the way. For Long Island car buyers, though, rising demand could mean less generous discounts. The 2014 model year officially begins Oct. 1, as the calender year 2013 moves toward a close with U.S. sales through August up 10 percent from a year earlier, according to the trade paper Automotive News. In August, sales ran at an annualized rate of about 16 million vehicles — the highest since before the recession began in late 2007. Protection plans start at $99 for two years of coverage with no deductible. For laptops, most schools have some kind of insurance on the machines they issue to students, as well as tracking software that can locate a computer if it is lost or stolen. Experts say parents probably do not need an insurance plan for low-cost machines or older hand-me-down models. Cases matter: A tough case, like an Otterbox Defender or a Speck, can sometimes protect smartphones from damage when dropped; they run around $30. Backpacks are particularly unforgiving to tablets. Screens often get crushed by books, or the corners get dinged when a bag is dropped or stepped on.

Assault in Syria Horrific images were taken this week of an alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria. Rows of bodies, including many children, fill rooms and streets in the eastern suburbs of Damascus, and Syrian activists are reporting hundreds of people killed. The Syrian government denies the use of chemical weapons, and an investigation continues. The civil war persists as forces continued fighting and droves fled the country.
